Whenever we bring visitors to Attabad Lake, we always explain its story before they start taking pictures, because this lake has a very emotional background. Attabad Lake was formed on 4 January 2010, when a massive landslide hit Attabad village and blocked the flow of the Hunza River.

The landslide was a tragic disaster for the local people. It destroyed homes, blocked the old Karakoram Highway, affected nearby villages, and changed the lives of many families in the region. As water from the river collected behind the landslide, a new lake slowly began to form. Villages, roads, trees, and parts of the old route were submerged as the water rose.

For many months, local people had to travel by boat to move between different parts of Hunza and Gojal. Trade, transport, and daily life became very difficult. Later, new road tunnels were built to reconnect the area with the rest of Hunza and Pakistan.

Today, Attabad Lake is famous for its beauty, but for local people, it is also a place of memory. That is why we always ask visitors to enjoy the lake respectfully. It is a beautiful attraction, but it was born from a painful event. This mix of beauty and history makes Attabad Lake one of the most powerful places to visit in Hunza.

Reaching Attabad Lake is quite easy if you are already in Hunza. The lake is located along the main Karakoram Highway, which connects Central Hunza with Upper Hunza, including Gulmit, Passu, Sost, and Khunjerab Pass.

If you are staying in Karimabad, Aliabad, or Altit, the drive to Attabad Lake usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes. The road is scenic, and along the way, you will see mountains, villages, river views, and the famous Attabad tunnels.

From Gilgit, the journey usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours by road, depending on traffic and weather. Most tourists who fly from Islamabad to Gilgit continue by private car, jeep, or tourist van toward Hunza and Attabad Lake.

From Islamabad, travellers have two main options. The first option is to take a flight from Islamabad to Gilgit and then drive to Hunza. The second option is the road journey through the Karakoram Highway, which can take around 14 to 20 hours depending on road conditions, stops, and weather.

What is the best time to visit Attabad Lake?

From our experience, the best time to visit Attabad Lake is from April to October. During these months, the weather is more comfortable, the lake colour is clearer, and most tourist activities are available.

In March and April, Hunza enters blossom season. Apricot and cherry blossoms make the nearby villages look fresh and colourful. The lake looks beautiful during this time, especially with spring colors around the valley.

From May to August, Attabad Lake is full of life. This is the best season for boating, jet skiing, family tours, photography, and lakeside dining. The water often looks bright turquoise under the sunlight, which is why most tourists love visiting during the summer.

In September and October, the autumn season brings golden and orange colors to Hunza. This is one of our favorite times to take photographers and nature lovers to Attabad Lake.

From November to February, the weather becomes very cold. Winter visits are possible, but boating may be limited, roads can be affected by snow, and the wind near the lake can feel freezing. Always check local weather before planning a winter visit.

Take a Boat Ride

Boating is the main activity at Attabad Lake, and we always recommend it to our clients if the weather is safe. Once you sit in the boat and move into the middle of the lake, the view becomes completely different. The blue water, high mountains, and open sky make the experience peaceful and unforgettable.

Attabad Lake is one of the best photography spots in Hunza. The lake changes color depending on sunlight, weather, and time of day. Morning and late afternoon are excellent for soft light, while midday often gives the strongest blue color.

Many tourists take pictures from roadside viewpoints, boats, lakeside cafés, and near the tunnel area.

Relax at Lakeside Cafés

There are cafés and restaurants near the lake where visitors can sit, enjoy hot tea, lunch, or snacks, and spend some peaceful time looking at the water. We often give our guests some free time here because the place is not only for sightseeing but also for relaxing.

Trekking at Baskochi Top

A less explored trek in Hunza. The trek to Baskochi Top is short yet adventurous, usually taking around 45 minutes to 1 hour, making it a perfect stop for travelers who want more than just roadside sightseeing. The trail passes through rocky slopes and alpine meadows, rewarding visitors with one of the most stunning aerial views of Attabad Lake.

See the Attabad Tunnels

The Attabad tunnels are an important part of the journey. These tunnels were built after the old Karakoram Highway was damaged and submerged by the lake. Driving through them is a unique experience, and when you come out of the tunnels and suddenly see the blue lake, the view feels amazing.

Attabad Lake is usually not visited alone. We often combine it with nearby places such as Gulmit village, Passu Cones, Hussaini Suspension Bridge, Borith Lake, Sost, and Khunjerab Pass. This makes the trip more complete and enjoyable.

For most first-time visitors, we often recommend staying in Karimabad or Aliabad, because these areas have more hotels, restaurants, shops, and easy access to Altit Fort, Baltit Fort, Eagle’s Nest, and Attabad Lake.

When visiting Attabad Lake, always carry some cash because small shops, boat operators, and local cafés may not accept card payments.

Wear a life jacket during boating or jet skiing. The lake is deep and cold, so safety should always come first. We do not recommend casual swimming here, especially for tourists who are not familiar with mountain lakes.

Bring a light jacket, even in summer. The wind near the lake can feel cool, especially in the morning, in the evening, or on cloudy days.

Visit early in the day if you want fewer crowds and better lighting for photography. During peak tourist season, the lake can become busy with boats, vehicles, and roadside visitors.

Also, please avoid littering. Attabad Lake is one of Hunza’s most beautiful natural attractions, and it is our responsibility to keep it clean. Support local cafés, respect local people, and remember that this lake has an emotional history for the community.
