How to Travel to Hunza Valley: Flight Schedules & Road Routes

There are two main ways to get to Hunza Valley - by road or by air. Both work well, but the best option depends on the season and how much time you have.

By Road Travel Route

The primary overland route follows the Karakoram Highway via Besham and Chilas. This road remains accessible most of the year and provides a reliable choice for mountain trips.

During summer (June to September), the scenic Babusar Top/Pass (4,173m) route via Naran opens up. It offers stunning high-mountain views, cutting drive times from Islamabad down to 12 hours. but During winter and early spring, closes following the first winter snowfall, all road travel routes via the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Chilas.

From Islamabad, the complete road drive to Hunza Valley takes 12 to 14 hours, depending on traffic, weather, and brief rest stops.

By Air Flight Route

There is no operational airport in Hunza Valley itself. Flights land at Gilgit Airport, from where a private vehicle drive takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours to reach Karimabad.

The direct flight from Islamabad to Gilgit takes roughly 45 minutes, saving a full day of road travel. This is the ideal choice for shorter trips or highly relaxed travel.

Flight schedules rely on clear weather, making morning departures the standard choice for all tourists travelling to Hunza Valley.

Seasonal Notes

Summer: Both the Karakoram Highway and Babusar route are open. This is the busiest season and also the easiest time to travel to Hunza Valley.

Winter: Babusar Pass closes. The only reliable road access is via the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Chilas. Flights to Gilgit can also face more weather-related delays during this period.

Vehicle needed: in summer, most cars in normal condition manage the drive comfortably. In winter, a stronger vehicle is sensible for the cold and distance, though you don’t need a 4×4 unless conditions turn bad.

Flight Delay Advice

Flights to Gilgit are weather-dependent. Cloudy conditions or poor visibility can cause delays or cancellations, especially in winter and early spring.

We always recommend keeping one buffer day in your schedule when you choose the by-air option. Our team also keeps a road backup ready so a delayed flight does not disrupt the whole trip.

Tip: If your dates are fixed and you cannot risk a delay, the road option is usually the safer choice for reaching Hunza Valley.

Essential Info for International & Foreign Tourists

  • Passport & Visa Copies: Always carry your original passport along with 6–8 printed copies of your valid Pakistan Tourist E-Visa. Security checkpoints along the Karakoram Highway (KKH) require these copies for quick registration.
  • Khunjerab Pass Timing: For trips to the Pak-China Border (16,000+ ft), depart Karimabad by 7:30 AM to ensure early arrival before border gates close and to avoid afternoon high-altitude winds.
  • Local Connectivity & Cash: Major network SIMs have limited coverage in remote valleys. We assist all international guests in obtaining a local SCOM SIM card and advise carrying sufficient PKR cash, as mountain ATMs can occasionally be offline.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hunza Tours

What is included in your Hunza Valley tour packages?

Standard packages cover private dedicated transport (sedan, SUV, or Grand Cabin), hotel stays with daily breakfast, driver expenses, fuel, toll taxes, and local sightseeing. Entry tickets to historic sites (Altit and Baltit Forts) and personal expenses are not included unless specified in a custom package.

How much do Hunza tour packages cost for families and couples?

Pricing depends on group size, hotel tier, and vehicle choice:

  • For Families: Standard Hunza tour packages for families start at PKR 65,000 per person. Our family-focused Hunza Valley tour packages for families include spacious SUVs or Grand Cabins with child-friendly hotel stops and reasonable daily drive times.
  • For Couples: Private Hunza tour packages for couples start at PKR 150,000 per couple, including dedicated transport and mountain-view rooms. For honeymoons, our luxury Hunza Valley tour packages for couples include private boat rides and upgraded resort stays.
What is the best month to visit Hunza Valley?

It depends on what you want to see: March to April brings pink cherry blossoms across the valley; June to August offers warm weather and open high-mountain passes; October to November delivers striking golden autumn foliage. Winter (December to February) is quiet, cold, and ideal for snow lovers.

Does mobile network and 4G internet work in Hunza Valley?

SCOM is the primary network provider in Gilgit-Baltistan with the best 4G coverage. Major domestic networks (Jazz, Telenor, Zong) work well in main towns like Gilgit, Aliabad, and Karimabad, but signal drops in remote spots like Khunjerab Pass or Hopper Glacier. Most 3-star and 4-star hotels in Hunza offer complimentary Wi-Fi.

Is it safe to travel to Hunza in a personal car (Corolla, Civic, or small car)?

Yes, the Karakoram Highway (KKH) and the main road up to Attabad Lake, Passu, and Khunjerab Pass are fully carpeted asphalt roads. Any well-maintained sedan or hatchback can easily complete the trip. A 4x4 jeep is only required if you plan to visit off-road side valleys like Naltar Valley or Fairy Meadows.

How many days are needed for a full Hunza trip?

A 5-day trip allows you to explore central Karimabad, Altit/Baltit Forts, Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, and the China Border (Khunjerab Pass). If you want to include side destinations like Naltar Valley, Hopper Glacier, or Fairy Meadows, plan for 7 to 9 days.

Can we combine Fairy Meadows or Skardu with a Hunza Valley tour?

Yes! We frequently organize combined Hunza-Skardu and Hunza-Fairy Meadows itineraries. Combining Hunza with Fairy Meadows requires a minimum of 7 days, while a complete Hunza and Skardu circuit requires 8 to 10 days by road or 6 to 7 days by air via Gilgit/Skardu airports.

What is a typical 5-day Hunza Valley tour itinerary?

A standard 5-day road itinerary covers the top highlights of the region:

  • Day 1: Travel from Islamabad to Chilas/Naran via Karakoram Highway or Babusar Pass.
  • Day 2: Drive along the Indus River to Hunza Valley; evening walk at Karimabad Bazaar.
  • Day 3: Full-day trip to Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Hussaini Suspension Bridge, and Khunjerab Pass (China Border).
  • Day 4: Morning visit to historic Altit and Baltit Forts; afternoon drive back to Besham/Chilas for night stay.
  • Day 5: Return drive to Islamabad.

How should we prepare for cold weather and altitude at Khunjerab Pass?

At 4,693 meters (15,397 ft), Khunjerab Pass can be cold and windy even in mid-summer. We advise bringing a windproof jacket, gloves, warm cap, and sunglasses. To avoid altitude discomfort, stay hydrated, avoid running at the top, and limit your stay at the border monument to 30–45 minutes.

Is Hunza safe for families, children, and senior citizens?

Yes. Hunza has one of the lowest crime rates in the region and a very welcoming community. Major spots like Attabad Lake and Karimabad Bazaar are accessible via paved roads. For elderly travelers, we recommend road trips with planned stops to help with altitude adjustments.

How do I book a tour package and what is your payment policy?

You can finalize your dates and vehicle selection via WhatsApp or email. A 40% to 50% advance deposit confirms your hotel reservations and transport booking, while the remaining balance is payable upon arrival on Day 1 of the trip.
