The Nemogram Stupa is a magnificent archaeological site in Pakistan’s Swat Valley. This ancient Buddhist complex, dating back to the 2nd or 3rd century AD, offers a fascinating glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture.

The Nemogram stupa is 45 km west of Saidu Sharif and 22 km from Belkot on the right bank of the Swat River in Pakistan. The site was discovered in 1966 and excavated in 1967-1968. Swat (the ancient Uddiyana Kingdom) is rich in historical monuments and natural beauty. In all directions, they are intertwined in a wide valley. British archaeologists Aurel Stein, Tucci, and other Italians worked tirelessly to record and protect these sites.

Mainly, three main towers and 56 smaller towers are distributed from north to south. There is also a monastery on the west side of the main tower. Coins were discovered during the Kushana period, and these stupas were believed to have been built in the 2nd or 3rd century AD.

In addition to coins and pottery from the Skuspat era, many stone carvings and plaster sculptures depicting various scenes from Buddhist mythology have been found near the stupa. These sculptures are displayed in the Swat Museum. There are a large number of stone carvings and sculptures depicting Buddhist mythology. The site boasts several key features:

56 Smaller Stupas: These smaller stupas add to the grandeur of the complex.

Ancient Monastery: A well-preserved monastery is located near the stupas.

Finds include Buddha and Bodhisattva images, narrative inscriptions, decorative and architectural elements, Buddha statues, secular scenes, sacred objects, and boxes containing relics and practical objects. 

Muscular atlases always support columns and ledges, naked cupids wearing crowns, Gandharvas holding musical instruments, winged creatures on triangular ledges, mermaids, armoring, and many other narrative scenes. Domestic scenes include marriage, hunting, wrestling, archery, groups of ascetics and warriors, processions of men, kings riding chariots, and general entertainment. 

Large artifacts in the Nemogram depict narrative scenes, decorative friezes, and images of Buddha and Hindu deities.
