Why is it called the Silk Route?
The name Silk Route comes from the importance of the silk trade between China and other parts of Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Chinese silk was one of the most valuable goods transported along these routes. However, silk was only one part of a much wider trade network.
Is the Karakoram Highway the same as the Silk Route?
No, they are different. The Silk Route was an ancient network of trade routes that connected China with Central Asia, South Asia and other parts of the region. The Karakoram Highway (KKH) is the modern road that connects Pakistan and China through the Khunjerab Pass.
When you travel from Pakistan to China on this tour, you are travelling on the modern Karakoram Highway through a region that was once part of the wider Silk Route network. Along the way, you can experience the historic trade-route landscape while visiting places such as Hunza, Sost, Khunjerab Pass and Tashkurgan.
