Where is Fairy Meadows, Pakistan?

Located in the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, Fairy Meadows is famous for its lush plateaus and majestic Nanga Parbat. Nanga Parbat is the ninth-highest peak in the world and is often referred to as the “Killer Mountain.” This picturesque meadow is located in the Diamer District at an altitude of 3,300 meters (10,826 feet).

The meadow features vast grasslands surrounded by dense alpine forests and is fed by glacial meltwater from the towering Nanga Parbat to the south. The name “Fairy Meadows” was given in 1953 by Austrian mountaineer Hermann Buhl, who was the first climber to reach the summit of Nanga Parbat. Locals call it “Joot”, while German climbers call it “Märschenwiese”, which means “fairytale meadow”.

Fairy Meadows is a 15-kilometer jeep ride from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway. The only road leading to Fairy Meadows, which was ranked as the second most dangerous road in the world by the World Health Organization in 2013, is open only to residents, who take visitors from the Raikot Bridge to Tattu. From Tatu, it takes three to four hours to hike five kilometers to Fairy Meadows. Fairy Meadows is located in the Raikot Valley, at one end of the Raikot Glacier. The Raikot Glacier originates from Nanga Parbat and flows into a stream that eventually flows into the Indus River.

My Unforgettable Journey to Gilgit and Skardu

Step 1: Arrive in Gilgit

There are several ways to get to Gilgit. The first is to fly to the city via Islamabad International Airport. There are three flights to Gilgit daily from Islamabad. The fares are very reasonable, but they go up in the summer. Another option is to take a bus from Islamabad to Gilgit. It takes 18 hours to travel along the Karakoram Highway. The cost is lower than the previous option, usually around 2500 rupees. The bus ride takes you directly to the Raikot Bridge.

  • By bus: 18 hours.
  • By plane: 1 hour and 15 minutes.

If you want to avoid the Karakoram Highway, flying may be the best option. Traveling along the Karakoram Highway is fun, but can also be very frustrating. Landslides are common on this road, and the pass can be closed for hours or even days, which can be confusing for travelers.

Step 2: Head to Raikot Bridge.

Raikot Bridge is located 80 kilometers south of Gilgit. It takes two hours to drive there. You can take a taxi or a ride to the bridge. Taxis cost more, about 1,000 rupees. There is also a NACTO bus station on the bridge, from where you can take a bus to Chilas.

Step 3: Extreme Jeep Journey

After reaching Raikot Bridge, our next destination is Fairy Meadows. There is only one way to get to Fairy Meadows: by taking an adventurous jeep. The journey takes about two hours.

Unlike the usual bumpy mountain road hike, this one is absolutely crazy. However, due to some accidents, the road has been recently widened to make it safer. The drivers are also experienced, so you don’t need to worry. The fare is slightly higher: 8000 rupees for a jeep. However, if three or four people share a jeep, they can share the trip.

If you are considering taking a jeep, don’t miss it unless you have to walk. The police will stop you halfway, so it’s not worth it. It will be an unforgettable experience just for the journey. However, the adventure is definitely worth it because the final destination is the stunning beauty of Fairy Meadow.

Step 4: Hiking towards Fairy Meadows

The jeep driver will pick you up at Rekot Bridge and take you to Tatu Village. From there it’s a two-hour walk to Fairy Meadow. Before getting off, be sure to tell the driver the departure time and date.

If you prefer, you can also hire a horseman. They usually take care of the luggage; they charge per kilometer. You can also ride a horse for 2500 rupees. If you like walking, this is also a good option. The walking trail is 5 kilometers long and takes about two to three hours to reach Fairy Meadow. Be prepared for hot weather in summer.
