Many people don’t know that Karachi Division and Karachi District are two different things. Karachi Division is a large administrative area in southern Sindh, covering around 3,500 square kilometers and made up of seven districts: Karachi East, West, Central, South, Malir, Korangi, and Keamari. It’s the economic heart of Pakistan, home to the country’s busiest port and countless industries that connect Pakistan to the world. Karachi was the first capital of Pakistan after independence in 1947, before the capital moved to Islamabad. Today, it remains the capital of Sindh Province. Within the division, Karachi District is divided into smaller zones to manage the city’s massive population of over 16 million people. Each district has its own role, some focus on business, others on industry or culture, but together they form a city that’s alive with energy, history, and opportunity.

History & Importance of Karachi City

Sightseeing Karachi Tour Starting from 20,000/-pkr

What this really means is that Karachi didn’t start as a megacity. In fact, it began humbly. According to many historians, the area now called Karachi was once a small fishing village, known as “Kolachi” or “Kolachi-jo-Goth”, established by Sindhi and Baloch tribes from Makran/Balochistan.

A critical milestone in 1729, the settlement got more formal recognition. Over time, its natural harbour and coastal location made it appealing for trade and shipping. A helpful reference says: “Karachi was a small fishing village when a group of traders moved there in the early 18th century from the decaying port of Kharak Bandar.”

When the British arrived in the 19th century, things shifted. The British East India Company took control of the city in 1839 after capturing the harbour fort at Manora Point. Under British colonial rule, Karachi’s importance grew: the port was developed, rail links established, and commercial activities expanded.

Fast forward to 1947 and the birth of Pakistan. Karachi played a pivotal role. It became Pakistan’s first capital, reflecting its status as a major port city and administrative centre. And as the decades passed, it transformed into one of the world’s largest urban areas, driven by migration, trade, and industry.

When you walk its streets today, you’ll spot landmarks that hark back to these eras. Buildings like Frere Hall (built in the 1860s) reflect the British presence. The Mohatta Palace (1907) shows a slice of early-20th-century wealth and design.

These landmarks tell stories of Karachi’s shift from a village to a bustling city. Walking through them, you feel the layers of time, from fishing nets to independence flags. Karachi’s history isn’t just in books; it’s in the streets and stones.
