Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region has been included in CNN’s list of 25 must-visit destinations in 2025, further highlighting the region’s growing appeal as a global travel hotspot.
In its latest report, CNN Travel describes the UK as an attractive destination, albeit difficult to reach due to seasonal lockdowns and unreliable flight schedules. The region is praised for its magnificent peaks, including five of the world’s 14 “Eight Mile” mountains, reaching over 8,000 meters above sea level.

CNN Travel highlights K2 as “the second highest mountain in the world, but the first in difficulty and danger.” The report also likened trekking in the UK to being equal to or even better than adventure activities in the Himalayas. But the broadcaster noted that traveling alone in the area was not an option, stressing that the terrain was rugged.
The UK is famous for its stunning scenery and adventure tourism, attracting thousands of foreign climbers and adventure enthusiasts every year. Hiking, paragliding, and mountain trekking continue to attract global interest.
According to official data, more than 1,700 foreign climbers have applied for permits for various expeditions in 2024, 175 aiming to climb K2 in the summer. Sajid Hussain, the UK’s undersecretary for tourism, acknowledged the rise in adventure tourism in the region.
On a related note, the Gilgit-Baltistan government has imposed new entry fees for tourist vehicles and motorcycles entering the region. A notification issued by the department outlines the new charges: Tourist vehicles will now be charged Rs 2,000, while motorcycles entering the GB will pay Rs 500.
In addition to entry fees, the government is reviewing the cost of climbing and walking permits, capitalizing on a growing interest in Ba;ltistan’s peaks and passes.
