The status of Skardu Airport has been updated and will operate as an international airport from Thursday 2 December 2021.
A spokesperson for the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) said in a tweet: “According to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s master plan to promote tourism across the country, Skado Airport will start from December 2, 2021. Started operations as an international airport. Initially, operations will only be carried out under visual flight (VFR) rules”.
According to VFR, airplanes are designed to operate in visible weather conditions (that is, clear weather). The use of VFR should avoid cloudy, heavy rain, low visibility, and other adverse weather conditions.

At the same time, after Saudi Arabia announced the lifting of Covid-related restrictions on Pakistan and five other countries from Wednesday, the first Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight carrying 121 passengers landed at Medina International Airport on Wednesday. There will be another five flights to Saudi Arabia on Thursday, with 1,400 passengers.
Pakistan Airways announced the lifting of restrictions and operates 35 flights to Saudi Arabia every week.
On November 25, the Saudi authorities decided to lift the ban on flights from six countries (Pakistan, India, Indonesia, Egypt, Brazil, and Vietnam) and announced that passengers from these countries do not need to be quarantined for 14 days.
A Pakistan Airlines spokesperson said that after the sanctions were relaxed when Multan’s first flight with 121 passengers landed at Medina International Airport on Wednesday, Saudi Arabia’s PIA flight operations were fully operational.
He said that PIA will operate a total of 33 flights to Saudi Arabia this week and will increase to 48 next week. Pakistan Airlines will fly from Lahore to Jeddah and Dammam, Islamabad to Jeddah, and Riyadh and Karachi to Medina.
The spokesperson said that on Friday, 1,130 passengers will take flights to Dammam, Riyadh, and Jeddah.
