Chappal/Chapli kebabs are very famous in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces of Pakistan. Pakistan tours and travels have taught me the origin of this famous food. Chappal kebabs are mostly found on Grand Truck Road and in hundreds of truck hotels in KPK. They are prepared from beef, mutton, chicken mince, onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander seeds. They are served with spicy sauces and make brilliant delights for food lovers. You can find detailed recipes here.

According to the folk tale, a few hundred years ago, in the suburbs of Mardan, there was a cobbler. He had a tough time in his business, so he invented the idea that he should sell kebabs made of buffalo meat. He started cooking alongside his normal routine work.
His business started to pick up. He used to serve this buffalo meat patty on a leaf of a tree. People started calling it Chambal kebab as the tree under the cobbler cum Cook was working was Chambal Tree. With the passage of time, this chambal reached fame. Other people started making it in other cities. As time passed by, the name Chambal was replaced by Chappal Kebab. The shape somehow looked weird, but the taste was unique and spicy.
Now, this chappal Kebab can be found anywhere in Pakistan. It is usually attributed to Peshawari Dish, and most Pathans are able to make good Chappal Kebabs. Chappal Kebabs are mostly made of beef and mutton, and now they are served in chicken as well.
